I was perusing the new threads/posts and suddenly the page went to an advert' telling me that my McAfee anti-virus had expired and "click here to renew". Now that was news to me since I haven't used McAfee in decades.
No way I could get out of it. I had to get rid of the window and open a new one.
Just beware of the scam.

What probably happened is one of the ads that they run was less than honorable. Ad networks are known to have advertisers place ads that sometimes have viruses, try to force software downloads and so on. Ad networks try to keep these weasels out, but it's really a game of wack-a-mole.

If, in this day and age, you do not use an adblocker, you're unnecessarily exposing your data to malicious third parties. I would strongly recommend that you read this article, and then pick and install your adblocker of choice. While you're at it, also install anti-tracking extensions and so on. Yes, really. Never had that happen. I will try to buy some add free here soon. Again, an ad blocker is basic self defense. Yes, some sites claim to rely on ad revenue. But as long as they aren't able to apply basic cyber hygiene, that's not my problem. Nor should it be yours. See this article as just the recent example in a long series of broken ad servers and ad companies. Hacked Ad Server Pushes SEON Ransomware, Trojans Via Malvertising.

Eh when I built the forum I agreed to the ads. I will work with them.

Eh when I built the forum I agreed to the ads. I will work with them. You can selectively turn off an adblocker for a single site. But please don't make people believe that ads are good. They are one of the biggest dangers to private users. And should be treated as such.
