Everybody knows that the 1880 Kampfe Star patent was the first time anyone used the term "Safety-Razor" Really? Merriam-Webster and the Oxford English Dictionary claim the term was used as early as 1842. I can do better: January, 5th 1833: More dates, links and findings here: razors.click/TheTermSafetyRazor/

I think Mantic just did a post on this. He didn't ask our opinions about it either....

It sounds like the term was used to refer to handling the razor. I always thought it referred to shaving.

It amazes me how you can come up with such good information!! The internet has made so much information right at the tips of our fingers! I was just thinking about how difficult this all would be if it were the days before the net.

I've been sitting in the reading room of the British Library for two solid months, reading old newspapers and you dare to claim.... OK. I used the internet. But an introductory lesson in googling wouldn't get you there

Whereas these days it is pure fun. Things I've learned in the last three days: - The biggest land owners in East New York in 1903 were... the Kampfe brothers. - Otto Kampfe had his own private zoo - Barbara Kampfe (Frederick's wife) drove an electric car (not a Tesla). Cost her $80,000 in todays money. - There was a fourth Kampfe brother - Rudolph - and they had three sisters living in Germany. Back to the olde news papers...

I like knowing these finer life-details. It's a small thing (and not all that comparable), but whenever I'm in NYC now I try and search out the physical locations of SE razor makers. Sometimes their homes and places of business are still standing....sometimes not.
