Do you folks have a preferred finish; chrome, brass, gold, silver, nickel, etc.? I used to prefer nickel but now to me, it all depends on the razor. Not only are many of the old razors mechanical marvels but they were designed to be pleasing to the eye (sales). On the micro matics I like chrome, on the 1912s I like nickel, on the injectors I like the textured gold, and so on. Don't get me wrong, we don't always have a choice; some of my best shavers have hardly any finish left and I wouldn't part with them. I'm just saying if you could pick.

Alan I really can not pick one out of the crowd. I think they all look good. The finish on them is not important to me.

I really have no favorites on finishes however I do prefer a good 'solid' plating like nickel, rhodium, chromium, as well as the solid brass razors like the early MMs. The thinly plated gold razors can look perty if they are in great shape, but with scratches or lacquer rubs they can look pretty grubby rather quickly.
So, I suppose I wanna be able to shine up my stuff!!
That said though, there are some beautiful wood handles out there too, ivory if you can find it, wonderful ivoroid and celluloid pieces......on and on!!

I have a razor that's plated in silver and I'm very partial to that plate metal. I just love the warm white satin of it. I don't polish it for shine. I just reverse tarnish when I notice it.
Don't misunderstand, I like chrome, nickle and gold, but the silver is just special to my eye.
Don't even ask what razor, since it can't be discussed here.

Yeah, I don't know why I even left out silver. It is a wonderful metal for razors. There are the odd solid silver kampfes that are real perty.

I also have one of the none talkable about razors that is silver plate. A 1908 model. It looks great shined up.

So when they are silver plated you can shine them up with a silver cleaner just like you would silverware?

A light polish if you use it and realize of course that it becomes shiny because the plate becomes thinner and you 'cut' into new metal. Problem is it can be easy to nick corners and rub off plate if you are not watching closely. Some folks rave on about using a house chemical electrolysis bath with foil paper - but I have not had satisfying results myself with it. Too bad they didn't make em all solid silver!! Then you just git out yer best rag and buff away! (That is why I like brass MMs - fun to polish) (* I had to add that I don't typically polish the older silver stuff I do have but rather let them oxidize to protect the silver. I am hoping they will last well beyond me!)
