I bought a very lightly used Vie-long horse hair brush from a member at another forum. This on is more a normal loft then the Pro I already had.
This thing lathers great. It seems to work like a boar on the Williams and feels like a Badger. I will try it on a cream here soon. First lather with Williams (newer version) was outstanding.

Sounds like a good brush.
I'm trying very hard not to let my BAD kick in.

I have come to the conclusion that everyone should have a horse hair brush in their rotation.

Used Derby Lemon cream today. Wonderful later. Worked great. Loving the horse. It also seems to dry quick.

I got one of mine from Shavetools. It is a pro so has longer hair. But he sells the shorter loft also. Get one. You will love it and so will tge hubby I bet.

Sargon is one source for the brush. I bought my Pro from him. As for the derby, it was given to me awhile back.

I think SD really should try one of these. I think SD NEEDS one of these, for sure! hehe John You're shameless! You know that don't you !? ;D Yes, I do, but right now I have $ going out in far too many directions. It's simply going to have to wait. OK, Plus I have far too much shaving stuff now, and still more coming in. But I do have room for a few more brushes if I'm selective. One is going to be a reknot boar. OK, I'll give you a choice... Horse brush for me, or KF menthol for CONUS. Which do I do? If I put off the brush I can do it in a bit and get folks their menthol in time for next summer. Hey! Gotta go!

Where do you folks buy your horse hair brush and Derby Lemon? West Coast Shaving has Derby Lemon in stock. Shavetools (Sargon) has Derby Lavender, my favorite Derby cream. Alan

Does anyone know much about the mix of horse hair - mane and tail - and what the differences are, and good ratios and the like? I can see that there are different ratios and wonder how to interpret that?
Also, between the bleached and unbleached any difference?
There seem to mostly be 20mm or 23mm knots. Any personal preferences?
I would like to pick one of these up but am not sure. Lots of questions eh?? ;D

YMMV applies as it does on anything, but I'll give it my best, Rocketman.
Tail hair is stiffer, has more backbone, and is scritchier than mane hair, so the more mane hair, the softer and floppier a brush is.
100% Tail brushes are ultra scritchy and rough, but load hard soaps very well.
75% tail 25% mane brushes are a bit scritchy, but still relatively soft, and have good backbone ( this is my personal favorite mix, though I have not gotten around to trying a 50/50, so I may prefer that, ultimately)
65%/35% are the most popular mix, and, like the first 3 are generally unbleached. The vie-long 12705 is probably the best known example.
50/50 mixes are the softest, and are generally bleached and dyed ( at least by vie-long). they are popular and well loved by fans of horse hair brushes ( although they are still scritchier than a high end badger, since horse is just generally stiffer and scritchier than badger across the board)
Whichever you end up trying out, just be aware that horse requires a somewhat different technique than most other brushes, a lighter touch, in my experience, so don't be surprised if it takes a little practice until you get the hang of it.
Hope that helps.
