That helps immensely!! Thank you.
It makes sense the way you explain it - and it is pretty intriguing really to realize that one can find a mix of tail to mane that will provide for just the right fit depending on style of use.
I have come to appreciate a good firm brush as I pretty much have settled in on face lathering. The soft badgers are ok for me, but I prefer strength and backbone in a brush.
Thanx for the explanation - that gives me a ground to start from in trying to consider what type to purchase. My problem now - I might just want to have a selection in order to compare!!! oh my

I have one of those also. It is a good brush if you like a higher loft more floppy brush. That is a technical term ofcourse

I picked up the J.L. Petree for face lathering, the loft on mine is ~50mm which is at the high end of my face lathering Horse Brushes.
I use circular motions with all three of my Horses and never had a "gap" develop, less pressure than with a Badger or Boar is needed and it builds lather quickly.
Horse hairs are a bit prickly out of the box but do soften with use, my 45mm lofted Horse has been in use since 2010, and it's softness compares favorably to my Shavemac Finest. The backbone remains very firm and I use it for soaps & creams.
The J.L. Petree had a few White Hairs that were very thick & prickly/irritating. Using a small nail clipper & plenty of patience, I slowly found the bigger ones and clipped them ~1/2 way down the shaft retaining the backbone and eliminating the harshness of the thicker quills.
My other Horses are 45mm & 47mm, from Gifts & Care, customized lofts are done free of charge. When checking out stated the requested loft in the comments section, this will add a few days to delivery. He does carry all ratios of Horse Hair, 35/65 in Natural Brown, 50/50 in Banded or Natural White, and the Pro-Series 25/75 in Natural Black or Brown and the Pro Natural White Horse/Boar, 40% Horse & 60% Boar.
The Pro Series do use a 59-60mm Loft, and is meant to be used with very little pressure, allowing the tips of the Brush to build and apply your lather. Patience & practice are necessary during your first few lathers.
