I finally couldn't take it any more and decided to see what all the hub-bub was about Semogue brushes. I purchased the 1460 boar model.
Handle Height: 48 mm
Handle Material: painted wood
Loft Height: 50 mm
Knot: 22 mm, undyed boar, densely packed, silver ring
Cost: $15.00
I love the shape of the handle, I just wish it was a bit taller and fatter. Whatever wood it is, it is very light. The paint job is very well done and the siver ring around the knot fits well. For me, the loft height is perfect. The bristles are very densely packed so it has plenty of backbone. The bristles are very fine and soft. There was no animal odor whatesoever. It lathers extremely well, as good or better as any brush I've tried. Holds water well, so you have to keep this in mind when using it. After it dries the bristles on top are twisted around a bit like you would see on a VDH brush. It doesn't have that perfect fan shape blossom you would see on other boars. I think this has to do with how densely it is packed and how fine the bristles are. Maybe it just takes longer to get broke in. Either way this does not affect the performance of the brush.
I don't think the bristles on this brush are trimmed to shape, I think they are hand packed to give the tulip shape effect of the knot. It seems one side may have been packed a little higher than it should be, as it looks a little off. Once again, does not affect the performance.
This brush does everything they say it will do.
Now to try a horse hair.
