I'm new to single edge shaving, only been at it 2 weeks or so. I'm hooked and I come by it honestly, from the first moment I felt an Ever Ready 1912 (that I'd bought just for the hell of it) loaded with a GEM Personna coated stainless steel blade on my face it felt right and I knew I was where I should be.
Once you open the door and start learning it's hard not to be intrigued by various SE razors that have evolved over time, there's something about them that's not at all Gillette-like in any way.
Gillette is the Harley Davidson Motorcycle of razors, been around since the start, still around and thriving, you know how it goes……people wearing Harley t shirts who've never been on a motorcycle.
GEM….Ever Ready etc They're the Indian Motorcycle of razors. Not much of a presence in modern times but there's a mystique about them and performance that's undeniable.
Motorcycles…..I ride and it's hard not to laugh or at least smile at the guy with almost no experience who gets his first bike….whips out his wallet and buys everything in sight.Yeah when it comes to Single Edge Razors I don't want to be THAT GUY !!! The guy you see buying all sorts of DE's before he knows which end is up.
Not long after that I stumbled onto my first SE razor and realized that for the price of one contemporary stainless steel razor or hell even a couple of modern chrome plated molded Zamak razors…one could have an entire fleet of vintage single edge razors that are a hoot to shave with and have depth, texture and history behind them.
Vintage Razors And History…..Wyatt Earp from the Shootout at the OK Corral was still alive several years after some of my vintage razors were manufactured,so was General Custer's wife Libby…
Yeah there's plenty of vintage Gillettes out there but with few exceptions I have to at some point like shaving with what I own to keep it around and for me that's mostly the early pre 1921 OLDs and Single Rings from then on it's almost as if they slowly but surely dumb'ed 'em down and detuned 'em to appeal to the masses.
So that brings me back to Single Edge,I'll try not to be THAT GUY,,,The one buying everything in sight, but doesn't have a clue.I haven't earned my SE stripes yet, there's much to learn and experience, please bear with me as I acquire a variety of DE razors and learn what's what.
