Near as I understand the concept of cushion... think of cushion as film strength. A lubricant w/o film strength is completely useless. The lather must hold onto the skin or it isn't in the right place to do the intended job. From most comments on shaving BBs, many are trying to duplicate the goo coming out of the can. Just like oil, viscosity and lubricity are more important than cushion volume. A thin, slick layer does it for me.

When I realized a thin cushion that was very lubricating was what I needed, I started having much better shaves.

I like mine very wet, almost runny, but not quite. For me, doing it that way helps prevent buildup inside the razor.
