Does anyone notice a change in performance from a shave stick after it has been either milled or squished into a bowl? I seem to get better lather from using as a stick. Even with my homemade Williams stick.

In the past I have grated some sticks into a bowl and used them. Don't know why but for me, they worked better in the original stick form.

Greetings
Although I grate or press most of my shave sticks into screw top plastic pots I do this simply because I find sticks messy and they keep better sealed in pots especially if you have lots of different types on the go at the same time.
The exception is those sticks that are made in the screw up deodorant type containers, I think these are great; you don't get partially dried slimy shave stick over your hands and they have a screw shut top which keeps the soap better.
I doubt that grating/milling a shave stick makes much difference other than to soften it a little so the brush will dig into the soap easier, in the case of the soft sticks I just can't see any difference at all. This is of course just my opinion I have read where others say a milled stick always lather better!
Regards Dick.

What you're experiencing may be a reduction in soap solids used for the shave. That is, grating the stick against the beard may use more soap for the shave.
I haven't noticed a change, but I always use far too much soap anyway and go for an extremely dense lather.

But that does make sense.
