I have had this twist up tube for awhile now. Alan was nice enough to give it to me. Tonight I was a bit on the bored side of life and decided to put to use. One puck of VDH Glycerin and 35 sec worth of microwave time later I am waiting for it to cool down. I used 3 ten second burst and one 5 to get it melted to pour. Very easy to do. After it was poured. The puck was just the right size. I will get another picture once it hardens up.

Will you be able to just rub this on your face or how does it work?? The glycerin will be pretty firm won't it?

Yup. It is nice and solid. Just twist up a bit. Wet and rub in wet beard. Work the lather up with a brush. Its a great way to face lather. Easy to use and fits into a shave kit. Came out really well.

I am going to have to go to the store and find a screw up deodorant thing like that and just toss the deodorant. I have seen this before and have always been intrigued. I wondered before about using the VDH deluxe. It is already a little soft, and I was thinking that addingg some liquid glycerin to it once it is melted might make it even a little softer for face applying. I will try it first with the regular VDH deluxe. Fuzzy dood - the glycerin VDH - it looks pretty much like pure glycerin soap. Is that what it is?

I have been contemplating using an old deodorant stick container to grate what is left of my MWF soap into so that I would have some MWF to take along when I am on a road trip. Perhaps now is the time to do that.

Rocket dood yup glycerin soap. Not sure if the deluxe melts or not. It does not have to be super soft soap to work good. I grated some williams and made a shave stick that works good.

Greetings These are my efforts from some time ago at making travel shave sticks. I grated a Palmolive stick into the underarm deodorant stick and crushed it down with the handle of a wooden spoon, it seems to work ok. I did not want to chance microwaving or otherwise trying to melt the Palmolive sticks as they are tallow. The glue stick is a slightly smaller diameter than the shave stick so I rolled it between my hand for a few minutes to warm it up and reduce the diameter, I then screwed it down the centre spiral/screw and cut off the excess. It was amusing making them and I will no doubt use them, they are however not any lighter or more convenient than a half full tube of shaving cream, if of course you are a 100% soap man these are a good solution for a travel wash bag. Regards Dick

Do y'all only use these for travel ?Fuzzy has been inspirational, did one last night and one today when I returned from running around. Here's how I did the Williams: Cut up 2 pucks of Williams, takes about 40 seconds per puck. Put soap fragments a small plastic container, dump about 2 ounces of scalding hot tap water on the soap fragments, let it sit a minute or two then use both thumbs to compress the mixture for about 2 minutes. Stuff into tube, leave it to dry with the cover off.Keep any excess soap in a covered container to mix with new supplies for future refills. The one on the Left is Mike's Natural Soap, the one on the Right is Williams

I use shaves stcks around the house as much as travel. One bonus with travel is do not need a cup or mug. Just the soap and brush. I guess you could face lather creams too. I just usually like soaps.
All those sticks look great.

RM, VDH Deluxe will melt fine. Just don't walk away from the microwave... it boils over easily.
Too, if you have access to "Clearly Natural" brand glycerine soap, it works just as good, maybe better than VDH as a shave soap. It melts as easily too. Add some scent to any glycerine soap while it's molten. I use my bay rum scent and also add menthol crystals to Clearly Natural. The menthol melts into the hot soap instantly.

Making the shave sticks worked out well, the only problem is face lathering.I tried a couple of times after making these sticks,I can make it work well but everything about it feels wrong, felt lost without my shaving mug.
I'll keep one of 'em for traveling and the other's gonna get squeezed into my shave mug.
Speaking of traveling,I know this sounds redneck...but if I'm using a shaving stick to travel simple & light, then I'm thinking why not also leave my brush home, and lather with my finger tips.
Gotta keep in mind that traveling with a shave stick would be a step up for me,I'm famous for traveling light.I've pretty much gotten along for head and face shaving with hotel/motel bar soap.I might shower a bit longer before hand or work the lather in for an extra minute or so,but the shave's not bad.

I love to face lather. I guess if I did not want to take a brush I would just use a brushless cream. I would never want to use one though. For me the brush is as big a part of the shave as the razor.

I am with the Fuzzster on this one. The brush and face prep has become a big part of the enjoyment for me. I don't find it a problem to include a brush and some soap when I travel. And, if I am in a rush I would rather just pass and look a little scruffy. Then I can get an even more fun shave when I get the chance. (The wife has gotten used to my strange ways of determining when a shave is necessary - the public maybe less so. Oh well!)

Did a test lather tonight,I'm going to roll with this a while.. Clearly Natural Glycerine (Aloe Vera Scent) This is 3 bars melted into my 3 1/2" Diameter - 2 1/2" Deep shaving mug.Looks like it's still liquid but it's cooled and solid. Might be my imagination, but it looks like this soap rinses out cleanly with less gunk formation than what I used to...

Nice looking shave mug. Keep us up on how it works out with that soap.
I used my home made Williams stick tonight. With my travel boar it was a good if not great lather. Outstanding shave though none the less.
