Ok folks, let's talk replating.
I know Shadowsdad has had some done. What are some sources, prices, options etc.?
Most importantly what does it do besides the obvious. Anyone notice any difference in "glide" or weight? I like a heavy razor, and like anyone else, I like a good looking razor.
I tried running one of my 1912s on my buffer the other day and as the saying goes, "You can't buff a *&^$". If the plating and finish ain't there to start with, it ain't gonna get pretty. I'm wondering if I should have some plating done this winter?
How about your thoughts, please.... Thanks!
John

John, I use Dave Glynn at www.RestoredRazors.com, in the UK. His prices are reasonable and the work is good. Don't do anything to the razor(s) before sending them. He'll buff them. He offers nickle and rhodium. The rhodium is more than 2x the nickle, but it's a multiple plate to get to the rhodium, so it's justified. I'm just too tight to pay the money. Nickle works just fine. I'll be long dead long before my nickle plated razors even begin to show through the plating again. I've only noticed the obvious eye candy factor. Of course the nickle protects the base brass from wear too. Moving opposite the direction you asked the question. You used the painted '06... did you find that it didn't glide with a proper lather?

Thanks for the link Brian. I'll check it out. I too would rather get two razors redone for the price of one. Sounds like nickel for me too.
With the '06 I felt that it glided about the same as other razors with the proper lather. What was your impression?

Same as yours, no problem with the glide with lather. Of course it's pretty ugly, but it brought it out of the boneyard to be able to pass it around. And it was pretty inexpensive, but I can't be proud of it. It's merely functional.
