Adding to the VAS love here. Nice one. I've been shaving exclusively with a couple of my VAS's (VC2 and VC4) for a couple of weeks and may just keep it up for another couple. I think I'll despine some Treets for next week and break out one of the earlier models.

Do you do anything other then despine the treets? After despining, you need to snip off the protruding side nubs on the Treet. I've only done it once before because I've been happy with the Feathers in all of the Auto Strop models ( and because I've basically been too lazy to go through the extra steps). I'll use a vintage blade as a template for how much to snip off the sides. There is the famous vid on youtube on what needs to be done:

Nice one and very good pics too!! Other than the handle it does seem to be the same as mine, same patent dates too

Have you been using the Feathers so far? Yup, and I will weep openly if they ever become unavailable. Knock wood that doesn't happen in my lifetime. I've also tried some vintage Valet blades, but they weren't the same. I'd use them only as a backup, but probably switch over to the converted Gem blades when push comes to shove.

FWIW, it's really not critical how much of the corner gets snapped off. The spring holds the blade tightly and it's not under any sort of stress that makes it want to shift or move out of the holder anyway.

I'm with you on the availability of Feathers issue. It will certainly suck if/when they stop making them. I haven't been too happy reconditioning NOS Valets - it just hasn't really worked well for me.

True, but I'm one of those that avoids undertaking projects because once I get into it I get sort of anal about things. I'd need to make sure I was conforming to the template. I'll endeavor to snip willy nilly and just go with it

Hmm, I've been on an OCMM kick for the last couple weeks. I think it may be time to give my VC1 some more face time.
