I'm considering having a few cocobolo wood handles turned for some lather catchers. That's the easy part. The hard part is finding thread stock of any material of the proper size and pitch. It isn't made anymore.
I have no idea what it will cost to get it made at a machine shop, but I think that's what I'm going to be forced to do. While I'm having some made for me, does anyone else want any? I'm thinking brass, but SS might also be considered.
Right now I'm not taking orders. I'm just exploring the interest level. Again, I have no idea what it will cost.
I'm also thinking of making the threaded insert for the new wood handle machined to also incorporate a metal end. The wooden handle I have has a press fit metal cap, and this newly machined part would incorporate a false metal cap, a portion to fit inside the handle (and get epoxied in place) and the short threaded section that would thread into the head. I hope that makes sense.

I meant to respond to this earlier Brian - and ..... : /
I would be interested in exploring this more with you. I think it would be great to have some threaded material. I have an early GEM handle that simply uses a straight length of threaded metal - looks like brass almost - which has a screwdriver slot cut into the end of the threaded shaft. It appears like it was simply threaded into the wood after likely drilling a pilot. I have it posted in the GEM section somewhere under 1900 GEM ....
If we could come up with threaded lengths it would be a great item to have around. Perhaps identify the thread sizes/cuts for ER and Kampfe - and GEMS are sometimes a little different at times too?? Confusing really and it would be a great project to sort out.
Caps sound good too. But potentially pretty pricey I guess?

The possibilities are endless and there's great potential to come up with something uber cool. That's exactly why I'll be in the stands at the 50 yard line following this with great interest.
I'm fantasizing about a flawless ER '14 head triple plated in nickel with a Canadian walnut handle.
However......Razorx needs to avoid fighting the war against whiskers on too many fronts. ;D

Well, this isn't quite dead in the water yet, but it's close unless it's a machine shop operation. I have been given another avenue to explore and it will take some time with calipers and the razor(s) at Home Depot. Plus I have Austin (tx) Bolt on it and they promised to call me back. AB has a reputation for finding odd ball stuff.
Yes, the "cap units" would be pricey, but the absolute Rolls Royce. Basically glue the wood handle onto the cap sim' unit and have the look of the original in SS, plus the thread. It's too soon to say if that's the way I'm going though. Still exploring options. Whatever I find I'll report back.

Resurrecting a classic (==old) thread. I caught the catcher bug and my mind is racing about handles... Brian: have you been successful in finding an appropriate thread that would fit a Lather Catcher or a 1914 model?

The short answer is no.
I considered having some made at a machine shop, but instead I just bought razors with handles having the proper threads that have seen better days, and made franken lather catchers with them. So far I've been able to PIF away the heads I don't want... given enough time.
I would have loved to find a die to make my own threaded stock, but I couldn't even find that.
The other alternative was retappping the head and using todays standard threads, but then the original handles would never be used again. Retapping is easy.

It would be interesting to find the old machine drawings for these threads. I am quite handy with a wood lathe. I have often thought of making a custom handle for some of my SE razors. But, alas, as Brian said, I cannot find a match for the thread pitch. Retapping, to me, was out of the question.

Rich, I couldn't bring myself to deface these old jewels either.
For anyone wanting to try to make threaded stock, the specs I was given was 0.168 + or - .002 x 24 pitch
