I was cruising an antique store after work yesterday and picked up this mug set A heavy, thick glass Gaylord mug with an old puck of soap, also came with an older Rubberset nylon brush The mug, soap and brush had an odd price of $5.29...cant say no to that price Not sure what kind of soap it is...smells like an old puck of Williams, but that one is more of a yellow/gold color, any guesses as to what this might be? I will give the nylon brush a try although I'm not sure how good it will perform...it is in pretty good condition and feels soft Will have to try and get the felt pen markings off the bottom...any suggestions? Picture of the mug after I cleaned it up With another Gaylord mug that I have, a red porcelain one And with the red porcelain talc container Thanks for looking... Kevin

Great looking mug Kevin,I especially like the opaque color..One of these days I want to get a bush like your Rubberset,I'd like to have at least one nylon.
I've come very close a couple of times to purchasing the Ever-Ready equivalent.

To remove/reduce the writing I'd go easy to start; detergent and water first, then maybe alcohol. Stronger solvents might start to dissolve the plastic.
I think if alcohol doesn't remove it I'd live with it and just accept it as part of the character of the handle. But that's me; I'd rather do nothing than hurt the handle further.
Good luck and let us know how it works for you!

That is a really cool find! I'm not sure what kind of soap that is. I have an Ever-Ready 300N nylon brush that looks similar, it's not a bad brush at all. They really soak up water fast.

Another possibility for removing the marker is use some swirl remover like McGuire's ScratchX... That's what I've been using on my Ever-Ready 200 brush's plastic surface as well as it's intended purpose (polishing my motorcycle's black paint) It's mildly abrasive,so mild that I also use it to remove fine swirls from clear polycarbonate windshields.

I have that exact same brush!! I was quite intrigued by the nylon bristles for this brush when I came across it. And decided I wanted it. I have only used it the once to shave with. I found the sensation of using the nylon was unusual, but it did lather quite decently. It would certainly be functional. I haven't brought it out again though. You have me thinking about it though. I would hope the alcohol would work. Mineral oil may assist??? There is a nice patina on the ivory colored base and an abrasive cleaner will affect that. Then again, it might work well. I know that Fantastic works great on boat fiberglass so it should be very gentle on the plastic - and it might loosen up the ink. Good luck! Nice mugs too!

Nice mug and brush. Soap looks the color of colgate. Great find. Not sure about the ink. But I agree with the "don't hurt the handle to take it off" crowd.

I shaved with this set up today...it was interesting I soaked the soap puck and brush while I showered (washed the brush first) The soap made a great lather, very thick and loaded up the nylon brush Although the brush felt very soft on my hand it was quite prickily/scratchy on my face, it is quite a stiff brush and it seems to hold a lot of lather and moisture Used a Gem OCMM with a 3rd use Gem SS/PTFE blade..the first 2 passes were ok but the blade didnt seem to "glide" over my face as smoothly as I thought it should. For the 3rd pass, against the grain, I quickly hand lathered some KMF cream and then brushed on a good layer of the mystery soap lather. Much better, very slick and I ended up with a super smooth shave. So far I have been able to get the felt pen markings to fade quite a bit using a Magic Eraser...will keep working at it After I shaved I noticed I could see some lettering on the mystery soap...I can make out the words "Shaving Soap" but can not make out the brand...does this look familiar to anyone? Thx

I'm going to guess it's Williams. I have an old puck of Colgate Barbers soap that has shaving soap imprinted on it, but the newer ones don't. The Colgate Barber doesn't have the circle that's visible in your fourth picture, Williams has that circle.Williams should be imprinted at the top if you're looking at it with shaving soap a the bottom.
All Williams puck are 1.75 ounces, if you can weigh that I bet it's pretty close to that and it doesn't look used enough to have taken that much weight off of it.
Inside that circle on Williams pucks is the mug of lather.

Here's a picture of a puck of Williams, maybe you can compare it to what you have.

Here's a picture of a puck of Williams, maybe you can compare it to what you have. It could very well be a puck of Williams, although I think it would be a different era. The lettering on my puck "SHAVING SOAP" goes half way around the puck, from 9 oclock to 3 oclock. There is a chance that it is the original soap to the mug, I understand that Gaylord made soaps...although I have never seen any, not even a picture

I dug out another old puck of Williams that I have and the scent and texture is almost identical, slightly different color but I dont think that means much...I'm thinking it is an old puck of Williams
