OK, just finished up using the vintage Williams granules and it worked very well, but it is a bit different than the modern version. This stuff set out for a couple days and it still had a slight tacky, or soft, sticky feel to it and it didn't want to crumble into the really small pieces like the modern stuff did. I'm going to attribute this to the higher tallow content in the vintage Williams.
After I got the lather to the consistency I like I could see some pieces that didn't dissolve completely. Now, this didn't make any difference in how it performed, but they where there. Tomorrow I'm going to start with less product and let it set for awhile in the water before I start lathering it.
Brian, the soaplets dissolved completely, as did the modern stuff. And you're right about it working well with the modern Williams that gives a lot of guys problems. i don't have any problems with it, but the two days I used the ground up stuff produced the best lathers I have ever made with modern Williams. And the lather from the soaplets was top notch.
This is probably a silly experiment, but I'm going to try this with a couple other soaps I have. Vintage Colgate is the next one I'm going to work with, specifically the Mug version, which is good, but not as good as the older Cup version. I'm thinking Colgate cut back on the tallow when they reformulated it to the Mug version so it may perform similar to the modern Williams.
OK, so, off I go in pursuit of a solution to a problem that probably doesn't even exist!

I like this idea. It looks like another good way to travel with a soap. Easy to transport too. I have a ton of Williams in the shave den and it is easy to come by. I am thinking that while I am off work this week I am gonna try this one out maybe.

That Williams container is awesome! Wonder why the powdered form of shaving soap went away?

Fantastic container!
I, for one, will be incredibly impressed if you can get the Colgate mug soap to work by this method. It's the only soap to date that I have completely given up on. I fed it to the bugs in the septic system.

Well, actually the Colgate Mug I'm doing this experiment with has worked pretty well for me. I believe it's because that water is so soft.

OK, day two with the vintage Williams "powder" is in the books. I started out with only 1/4 tsp of the product and let it set in 2 tsp of water while I got the other stuff ready. I'm not sure if it was due to using less product or letting it set awhile in the water but today it fully dissolved into lather and it was outstanding. I kept adding water and finally stopped at 4 tsp.
Next I'm going back to the modern Williams and try again with just 1/4 tsp of soap and see how it works with less product.
Meanwhile, I ran the remnants of the puck of Colgate Mug I've been using through the food grinder and am going to let it dry a few days before grinding it into more of a powder.

Yeah, that's what a lot of the ads say to do with it. Cool holder there.

Interesting method there. So a damp brush some shaving soap powder and work into a lather. I like it. I think I might jump on the "make so powder" train. Well see.

Used the Colgate Mug Granulets, my name since Soaplets is already taken, this morning, and it worked great. Used 1/4 tsp of Granulets and 4 tsp of water for very nice lather. I've got a few more pucks that I am going to convert to Granulets over the next few days.

Have any of you soap grinders thought of using a food dehydrator for drying your pucks before grinding? Just a thought from a guy who uses one to make beef jerky... Make some soap jerky...lol
