Root Beer ? Around here it's Dog 'N Suds Drive In Brand, good stuff. It's a Midwest thing, originated in the 1950's,at one point there were 850 locations ...now there are only 14 left.Even living as I do about halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee we are blessed to be near 2 of those remaining 14 Dog 'N Suds Drive-ins,one of them within walking distance. They still have car hop service with waitresses in uniforms that come to your car to take your order and serve it on those little trays that hang on your car's window. "The "Dog" in Dog n Suds represents the Coney Island hot dog-style chili con carne over hot dog or chili dog served there, while the "Suds" represent its super-sweet original formula homemade root beer, which is served in frosted glass mugs and claimed to be "The World's Creamiest Root Beer." Dog n Suds root beer can also be found in some vending machines throughout the midwest." That's right gentlemen,a rootbeer float, ice crystals and all, delivered right to your car with a smile. Here's the one in our town: www.dognsudsgrayslake.com/

Neat! I hope it remains there for a very long time. I remember the Stewarts drive ins in my yout.
More recently, the discussion of Chicago and hot dogs brings this to mind, I'd buy Chicago Red Hots semi locally. I'd drive 90 miles to buy them by the case. Fantastic hot dogs, and right now I'm salivating just like one of Pavlovs dogs. I wish I could still get them, but I intend to make my own since I can't. I love a good hot dog (sausage too), and yes I want to see how they're made.

Those are the ones! 100% brisket meat, absolutely outstanding! I never loaded them up like a "real" Chicago dog though. I loved the taste of the dog itself treated very delicately.

I'm all in for this: "When we have a TOST convention, my vote for the place is diffinantly, in walking distance of..."Dog n Suds Drive-In"....your town...."We just need a wealthy supporter to join us in our crazory hobby. Perhaps Sir Richard Branson - he could use a shave! Bill Gates usually looks pretty good - but with the right soap, a crisp new blade and a saucily buffed up Little Lather Catcher he would look Great! Or.....Oprah? Probably been plucked too many times to need a razor. Well, you're welcome to join too Girl! : ) I really have been thinking about these darn hot dogs since you guys wrote this stuff up. Steamed buns - yeah. Poppy seed buns - well I never! Celery salt. Really dude?? Shook on the weiner, or the whole thing, or the bun? ? I never heard of that either. Chili dawgs.... YUM. I grew up with the A&W rootbeer served to the car - awesome memories. There is one spot about 80miles from here that still has a drive in style where they bring to your car. They have a special though that I ordered once and just felt troubled afterwards - a hamburger with a weiner in it. Simple. But......not sure they go together.

RM, you have my mouth watering thinking of the possibilities. I just love a really great hot dog or 2. A Red Hot Chicago is a really fantastic hot dog.
Would you like a few recipes for chili for a dog? I have one that at the last shindig I brought it to some folks didn't even use it on HDs, they just spooned it onto their plates and used it for, well, I don't know. They just wanted to hit their tastebuds with it once in a while and asked if it was OK to do... YMMV and all, of course it was a "Yes", go for it. I'm salivating like one of Pavlovs dogs at the moment.

They have a special though that I ordered once and just felt troubled afterwards - a hamburger with a weiner in it. Simple. But......not sure they go together. Yep Celery Salt but more importantly NO Ketchup Here ya go bro: Chicago-style hot dogA Chicago-style hot dog, or Chicago Dog, is an all-beef frankfurter[1][3] on a poppy seed bun,[4] originating from the city of Chicago, Illinois. The hot dog is topped with yellow mustard; chopped white onions; bright green sweet pickle relish; a dill pickle spear; tomato slices or wedges; pickled sport peppers; and a dash of celery salt.[1][5][6][7] The complete assembly of a Chicago hot dog is said to be "dragged through the garden" due to the many toppings.[8][9] The method for cooking the hot dog itself varies depending on the respective vendors preference. Most often they are steamed, water-simmered or grilled over charcoal, the latter of which are referred to as "char-dogs." The canonical recipe[1] does not include ketchup, and there is a widely-shared, strong opinion among many Chicagoans and aficionados that ketchup is unacceptable.[10][11][12][13] A number of Chicago hot dog vendors do not offer ketchup as a condiment.[14]en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago-style_hot_dogThere was a bar a little over the border into Wisconsin that I rode my motorcycle to for lunch sometimes, they served a hamburger with a bratwurst patty on top of it... I remember the first time I got one the bartender asked me if I wanted lettuce and tomato on it ? I told her why would I want to ruin it with that ?

OMG Marc, you just released the flood gates of saliva all over again!
Char-dog is just fantastic if it's a Red Hot Chicago! That's exactly how I did them! Over real lump charcoal.
I came back to write that Birdlives started this thread about the generousity of of a member and we've turned it into something to salivate over.
But I took a tiny bit of time and saw that BL turned it himself. We just ran with it.
Birdlives, take it back to shaving whenever you want. After all, it's your thread. (good thing we're all laid back friends here, and folks don't get PO'ed!)

We have exciting new information regarding hot dogs though - so....... (I am personally bad for changing the topic - just ask coworkers, family, friends, folks here ..... bad RM, bad) Awesome info on Chicago style dawgs - I am going to give some of these ideas a try! I love hot dogs. (no ketchup, yikes, I can try) And, Birdlives' Good Fortune too!

So it appears...and am I correct at assuming this ?....that the cats here at TOST over-whemingly prefer Chicago Dogs to New York Dogs? Is this the general consensus??
