Did the convex blade cover come before the beveled edge blade cover?

So Tom....you have been noted as saying that you prefer the convex curved top Damaskeene to any other razor and the 1914 is a close second...So does that mean, you prefer the curved top '14s to the beveled top regular 1912's?? I know all of the above razors shave very close to one another and this question is probably splitting hairs, or is it?.....But since this has been brought up....and people have been asking me more and more about SE's lately...I would love to quote you accurately on this perticular topic of your preferences.... Thanks my man...I am guilty of dropping your name and opinions from time to time but I mean it as the sincerest form of flattery...or is it plagerism....lol

I do prefer the round cover plate, which is why the Damaskeene, 1914 and Streamline are the top three for me. As Gem Cutlery became Gem Safety Razor they started putting the beveled front edge on it, and that continued with the flat version of the later 1912's.

I've been trying to whittle down my razors to a minimum, just keeping the rotation down to a few that I like best. I wanted to try a Damaskeene so I acquired a couple of convex covers and a beveled cover. Too me the convex covers are milder than the 14 and ASR 12s. I tried the beveled cover and found it to be closer to the ASR 12 in aggressiveness. Tom, does it seem that way to you also? I also prefer the standard length round knurled handle to the shorter and thinner round knurled handle. The Damaskeenes are great razors but just to mild for me. I should mention that all 3 razors I tried were closed combs. Would the open comb be more aggressive? How about a Streamline? Would that be a bit more aggressive than the Damaskeenes?

Seems like there's something good about the convex covers.I've had weird luck with the Damaskeene's.I acquired some GEM Cutlery versions over time and they all had the bevel, never was able to experience the full convex blade cover...thought the shaves were ok but definitely prefer 1914's and also (when I had one) the Streamline.

I don't feel the blade stops as much on the rounded cover plate models as I do on the later 12's with the flat cover plate. Plus, I prefer the looks and feel of the round, knurled handles over the later handles. I don't think the open comb model is any more aggressive than the standard comb-guard. Mine has the light, hollow handle, but I've put the frame on a couple different handles and it feels the same to me.
The 1914 and Streamline are both more aggressive/efficient than the 1912's, but the '12 always get the job done for me reliably. The Streamline feels like a 1912 that's been spending a lot of time at the gym along with taking steroids.
I've always been curious why they added the bevel to the leading edge of the cover plate. They obviously thought it improved performance somehow because they kept it up through the Clog-pruf but then went away from it with the Flying Wing/bullet tip. Maybe the lack of it is what makes the later ones less aggressive? Don't know.

Ha,Ha...you guys are killin' me...I've heard the Streamline was on the aggressive side, but I'd never heard that "The Streamline feels like a 1912 that's been spending a lot of time at the gym along with taking steroids."...LMAO..... Alan...I do believe, when you hit the right combination, its possible to control RAD...I've seen cats settle down with a good razor that made an honest man out of them....lol....But I think you might be having a little too much fun playing the field to settle down just yet..lol... Tom, you have forgotten more about these razors than I will probably ever know....but from reading some of your opinions and also from reading some of the advertisements for these razors and especially for the Micromatic, I've developed a theory... I believe two of Gem's main goals were 1. to make a razor easy to load and use...They certainly got that right, right from the get-go with the 1912's..and 2. to make a razor that forces the average self-shaver to do everything right...Now while the rounded head gives the 'professional' self-shaver; like those here at Tost; a dial if you will to make those micro-adjustments and fine tuning to their technique, to get an exceptional shave experience...I believe the flat beveled head might make it easier for the normal cat who doesn't think about "chops" to click into the right over-all angle to get a great shave....As Gem says, the Micromatic forces everyone to shave correctly... Right now, I'm loving the beveled edge ER 1912 and OCMM, but looking forward to trying the Damaskeene and 1914 I have coming in...mainly because I want to dig first hand what all these cats I respect so much around here are raving about....I'm sure, all of these beauties will shave as good or better than a great barber shop shave, cause this ER 1912 and OCMM are already doing just that...This whole SE scene has bumped the heavy groove factor way up in my shave cave...
