Recently I've been trying to obtain a 1912 type GEM SE like the one that Brian (Maine Brian) has with the finely fluted handle. I ordered 2 and one came the other day. It has the fluted handle but the head is different from any other GEM I've seen. It looks like the Damaskeene with the curved cover, no bevel. The inside of the head says "GEM Brooklyn, New York Made in USA". The back of the head where it usually says GEM or Gem Jr has nothing printed there. Where the handle screws in it says "PATD 1912". The height of the head itself is shorter than any other GEM I have. On all my other GEMs, the head is 7/8" from the tab to the handle. This one is 5/8" from tab to handle. Normally, the vertical part of the head tapers down to the handle via a couple of steps with curved sides. On this one it looks like the bottom step was eliminated. It bends to the handle a little below the 2 studs that hold the spring. Anyone ever see this type before?

That's the handle. And looks like mine with one exception. From the thumb tab to the handle on mine is just a hair under 1" and has GEM printed on the back.
I wonder if there were different "models" of '24s?
Yes, it's a "pat'd 1912" at its heart.
Alan, so how does it shave?

Thanks very much for the pics Tom, that is exactly what I have. I don't have the case, just the razor. Brian, it shaves great! It's not as aggressive as a regular 1912 but is much more aggressive than any of the Damaskeenes I have. It takes a bit to get used to the difference in length but once I got that down it was clear sailing. I have another on the way that has the standard head height and has GEM Safety Razor Corp written on the back of the head.

Yup, that sounds like a '24! I call it my Goldilocks razor; it's "just right".

I got the other one in a couple of days ago. It has a standard head height. It came in a silver case that is in great shape outside and inside. As I stated above it has the Damaskeene ad on the inside of the head and "GEM Safety Razor Corp, Brooklyn New York, Made in USA" on the back of the head. Does anyone know when they started calling it the Gem Safety Razor Corp?

They became Gem Safety Razor Corporation after the 1919 merger with ASR.

Thanks Tom, a very happy Father's Day to you!! Hope you got to go out to eat but have a feeling you're smoking up something good out back. This razor has the beveled head so even though it has the Damaskeene ad inside it is not a Damaskeene. I'm guessing they were trying to promote their blades and use up old base plates at the same time. So 1912 razors with just Gem or Gem Jr on the back came later?
