I was going through some things yesterday and came across what appears to be an old travel brush. It's a tube about 2 and 1/2" long and 3/4 of an inch in diameter. There is a cap on one end; when you take it off you can push out a brush from inside the tube and screw it in to the end of the tube. The cap then screws into the other end of the tube. The bristles appear to be boar but I could be wrong. Either way, they are in great shape. The tube is silver, either stainless or plated. It belonged to my grand father or great grand father, can't remember which. Just wondering if I'd be ruining it if I tried it.

If it was mine I'd use it. It was intended to be used. If it poops itself the knot can be replaced. I doubt that it's a collector item worth megabucks. It's worth far more to you. So you need to decide if it's worth more intact and unused or used and maybe reknotted and useable for it's intended use.
Would granddad want you to have it hanging around or in use? Only you can guess, and if you can't then it's still up to you to decide.
If it's as old as you say there's simply no way it's SS unless the owners lived to an extremely old age. It wouldn't surprise me if it was plated brass.

Yeah, I'm not a collector. If I cannot use it I get rid of it. I was thinking if it would fall apart I'd just give it to someone who collects rather than ruining it. However, I didn't think about just re-knotting if it breaks. With that in mind I think I'll go ahead and use it. It really has no sentimental value to me, its just a handy little brush in great shape.

Use it I say. Those can come in handy. I bought an older one off the bay that is plastic. I used it till I got an omega awhile ago. I use family stuff when I can.

My favoite is an old Fuller travel brush given to me by an old time barber. Use it an enjoy the simplier times that it represents.
