I recently received a generous PIF of an OCMM from bprendie. Just before that, I acquired a Clop-Pruf and did not enjoy it at all, so I was skeptical about the OCMM and a bit intimidated. After shaving with it, I find myself in a bit of a quandary. I did not peel my face off or cut myself badly and the shave was very close, but I can't honestly say I enjoyed using the razor. I believe it is a lot smoother shaving than the CP because there is no blade gap which makes it similar to DE OCs I enjoy using. In the Gillette Old Type and the Merkur OC the blade is bent slightly to lay flat on the comb but the OCMM blade is not. The DEs shave smoother and feel more secure as the blade move through the stroke. With the OCMM I constantly felt like I was about to nick myself. So while I understand why many shavers like the OCMM for its performance, I am uncomfortable using it. I will try it again to see if it grows on me over time. But as of now, I see another candidate for a PIF.

The OCMM is definitely a polarizing razor. For me personally, I'm not a huge fan of it, but there are many who swear by it. I'll be curious to see if it grows on you at all. One thing I can say for sure, a lot of the guys around here prep their lather differently with an SE than with a DE, and create something a bit more watery and slick. That could be just the edge you're looking for.
Good shaving! Bob

I love them. I put the OCMM just behind my Streamline and Damaskeenes for great shaves.

The Gillette OLD Types are the only DE razor that come close to the shave of a fine Single Edge Razor,I have a lot of respect for the OLDs particularly 1921 and earlier.I consider the OCMM to be the finest Single Edge razor of them all and surely as smooth or smoother than the OLD Types probably because single edge blades are vastly superior to any Double Edge blade.

But as of now, I see another candidate for a PIF. I'm not going to pretend to know how long you've been blade shaving, so bear that in mind regarding my response. The razor was PIFed to you, so you own it. It cost you nothing and when you PIF it you'll receive nothing, so it's not tying cash up. Unless you put a new blade in it it eats nothing, so why be in a hurry to decide "Right Now!" whether it's going to work for you or not? Give it time. If you're new to SE razors you might have some growing to do. That's not a put down of you, but lots of us went through that. If it's not your cup of tea, put it down for a few months and come back to it later. If you've tried it a number of times over a year (just to pick a time period), then maybe it's just taking up space and it's time to PIF it out, but be patient. Give it time. At least that's what I would do. Do as you wish.

My week long experience with OCMM had its ups and downs. The razor is capable of giving the closest, finest shave of any razor ever made. On the other hand, the Beast can be an efficient meat carver if one looses concentration or lapse in technique. I thoroughly endorse ShadowsDad's thoughts I placing the Beast in hibernation for a couple months. That is what I have done with mine. I am relatively new to SE razors, so I need more time to hone my techique befor I rattle the cage of the OCMM.

Give it time....give yourself time....take it cool.....that razors been biding its time for maybe 80 years....so it's not in a hurry....When the time comes that the sight of it makes you want to get it out of your house, I'm sure there will be many deserving folk whose life you can enrich by piffing it to them then same as now.... But maybe you'll find that this critter isn't a beast at all...many things in life are just a matter of timing... Of course, whatever you decide to do will be the right thing...

Sorry I gave you the impression that it was on its way out the door (actually, I was trying to be cute). As I said, I do plan to use it and see what happens. It is true that I am new to SE shaving and the OCMM is the first of the 6 razors I have tried that I found tricky to use so I am prepared for a learning curve. I'll let you know how things progress.

I also agree that you should give the OCMM a bit more time. Like you I also didn't have a great experience with the Clog Pruf but decided to try it again. I know that everyone's experience will differ but I found the OCMM to be very smooth and that was my first time out with it.
My Fatip Grande is far rougher then the OCMM and my Cadet Robusto is just a tad rougher. I know not everyone likes carbon steel blades but I believe that they have softened up the OCMM. Give it a few more chances at that point it will probably be for you or it won't. Strange thing is that being very new to the SE world I was so blown away by the OCMM that I bought two.

I would appreciate posters on TOST not to use the term "us" when talking positively about the any Micro"Junk"omatic. I take it as an offense when you seem to include me in the love for this louse piece of shaving equipment. Thank you all for your future courtesy. Hey Fuzzy, you should have known that I would post something like this! And I thought the OCMM had teeth. The Beast pales in comparison to the mighty Cast Iron Possum

Just for the record, and from the perspective of a long time cut-throat shaver, the OCMM is simply the next best thing. I have managed to get close to cut-throat effectiveness with Henckels and Heljestrand lather catchers, but if you want a nice efficiency/effectiveness ratio, the OCMM is the SE to go for. The others (I've tried about 20) are nice - and certainly better than any DE I've tried - but that's it. The OCMM took me about four shaves to master, and since then, it's become my go-to razor at 0400am when a cut-throat just won't do in terms of efficiency.
The other SEs have found new homes with my staff (who do not use cut-throats, and accordingly lack the necessary manual prowess). They like them a lot, too.
