As the question in the subject line suggest, I need some tips for quick bead prep. Normally, I take a hot shower and rub in some type of preshave oil after I am done. However, I am scheduled for back surgery in the not so distant future to repair a fractured L5 vertebrae that has developed into a significant pars defect and lots of pain. Anyway, given I will not be able to shower for a while, other than a hot towel, is there any other suggestions from my friends here?

Sometimes I just stand over the sink with HOT water blasting and splash HOT water on my whiskers for 2 minutes...Then maybe the hot towell or not....But that 2 min splash hydrates good for me.... So sorry to hear about the back....pain sucks!!....Such a drag man...I fractured a vert. in a car accident many years ago...Recovery took a while for me but not too bad....about a year for everything to be back to normal...although I lost 2 1/2 inches in height... ...but the pain part was managed very well...and I really haven't had problems with it since....I hope and pray things go smooth for you my friend...I'm sure the modern procedures have improved quite a bit....Whats your prognosis and recovery time looking like ?

I usually just wet a wash cloth with hot water and hold it over my face for about 2 minutes where I will be shaving. Then when I get ready to shave, I splash on some water, and lather up.

In the winter I do the hot towel routine, and then face lather. In the summer just face lather. I make sure it takes about 3 minutes.
If it turns out that you can't do that, try Cremo Cream. It's hand "lathered" with water and that's basically it. Very fast and the product is surprisingly good. Follow the directions on the tube, don't even think of using a brush. KMF will work the same way.
Have a quick recovery.

Thank you to everyone for your well wishes and thoughts. My prognosis is very good to excellent; my recovery time is expected to be 6 to 8 weeks with limited activity and therapy. A full 6 months until I am considered "normal". Of course as Marty Feldman said in Young Frankenstein, "Abby Normal, yes that was the name of the brain."

What I do is wash my face with warm water and soap. Not hot not cold but warm water. Then I face later. Take your time with the wash and the lather. It should work out good. Sorry to hear about the back problem,

Good luck with your surgery.
I rarely shower before shaving and pretty much prep at the sink like a couple of suggestions above.
Suggested wisdom through the years has been A - prewash with soap and warm/hot water to remove the oils from the hair to allow for water penetration and quick hydration of the hair B - use a towel/cloth loaded with warm/hot water and hold on face two plus minutes (or splash water onto face for awhile - such as in the shower, or at sink) C - apply lather (face lathering assists with further hydration - useful if rushing the other steps) D - carve away
The important things are to clean off the oil then expose the hair to water. Hydrated hairs cut much easier than non-hydrated ones. A properly hydrated hair is really key.
The shower is truly the best way to do the above as it is easy. But, if you consider your preparation steps you could probably be successful with a mug of hot water, a chunk of soap and a small cloth.
It is mostly all about hydrating the hairs which swells them and lets a sharp blade 'pop' the hairs right off.
Good luck with your recovery. Don't have too much fun now! And, a good shave will help you feel GREAT!!!

While I always shower before I shave there have been times when I had to shave long after the shower. All I do is wash my face well and do not dry it after rinsing. After running the hot water over my brush for a few seconds I do use a small barber towel soaked in hot water and wipe my face to get it a bit wetter. Then I just lather up and shave away. Do not always get a BBS shave that way but when this happens I don't normally need one.
