I was fortunate enough to get not one but two different Gem Damaskeene razors. I never had a Damaskeene but had read many of the positive reviews about it. My first Damaskeene is a closed comb verison. The outside of the box is in fair condition the inside is in good condition. The case included a Damaskeene razor blade holder. The razor itself is in excellent condition you can say it's in near mint condition!
The curved top plate does make a difference. I used to think that a Damaskeene was nothing but a glorified 1912 but I was wrong. The closed comb Damaskeene gave me a very smooth thorough shave and to me it was different then a regular 1912. I believe that this razor does deserve the praise it gets. For anyone thinking about acquiring a Damaskeene you won't regret getting one.
Nearly two weeks later I was extremely lucky to have found another Damaskeene on flea bay. I really do mean that I was lucky since it was an open comb Damaskeene with the case, stropping attachment, and the steel vault with four of the original razor blades. This lucky find was sitting there with no bids! I watched the open comb Damaskeene just linger for around six hours as I tried to make up my mind to get it or not. Looking back I can't believe it took me long to decide jumping on it ... with still no bidders!
The outside of the case in good condition (not great) the inside condition is very good. The steel vault is in very good condition I believe there used to be seven razor blades four are left one unwrapped and three wrapped. Even the original paper slip is enclosed in the vault which reads "It is unsanitary to exchange old blades buy new ones! Seven for 35 cents." The stropping attachment has a small tarnish spot on attaching end and that's it. The razor itself is not in mint but good condition This was a great find that was ridiculously easy to get!
The open comb Damaskeene seemed even more mild then it's closed comb incarnation yet at the same time it wasn't. I became far too confident with the razor that I started to add more pressure and speed. Thinking how mild and easy the razor was I paid the price. I ended up with three weepers two on the left side of the neck and one on the upper lip, the strangest thing is that I didn't even feel any aggressiveness from the razor.
It's not common for me to get nicked with any SE I have tried so the next time I will be more careful. It behaves more mild then the closed comb version, I was over confident not being careful and I got bitten. The OC Damaskeene is am excellent razor and I was lucky to get it easily. I highly recommend the open comb version of the Damaskeene.
