Just saw a Plymouth brush in our SOTD thread. Anyone know any history of this brand?

Alan, If you are referring to the one pictured here then I wish I knew more about the company. Pictured with it here are 2 other brushes made with the same technique and materials. I believe they are a celluloid shell that is filled with plaster. The Strong Set is my prized brush because it isn't shaped quite like anything else. They are kind of hard to come by since I've been looking for a couple for people who have asked about it. The Made Rite boar knot seems to still work ok. It lost a few hairs the first time I used it but since then has been fine. The hair is a little yellow from age but that's ok for me. I'm having a hard time justifying re knotting it As far as Plymouth goes, I have seen 3 of them but only this one with this type of construction. One of them looked to be injection molded and the other was a long handled brush like a ""Barbershoppe" brush. though I do believe they predated the "Barbershoppe". I like this type of construction because of the ease of restoring. But they are a little harder to find because if they were ever thrown in a box and placed out in a shed they froze and busted if there was any moisture at all left in the plaster. If I was a betting man I would almost wager that all three of these were made by the same company and that they made them for several other companies as well. Century, and Sure Set are two others I have come across but they were cracked. Anyway I wish I knew more about them!

Interesting, and thanks for sharing pictures and observations about these unique brushes. All three are quite good looking for sure.

Yes, Interesting! They look fantastic too! The celluloid with plaster has an almost ivory look in the pix. Do they look that way up close and personal?
Anyway, nice brushes.

Thank you Tom ! I think I was drawn to them because I see very few out in the wild that have survived well. So when I see a decent one I hate to leave it unused Thank you Brian ! They look pretty mush as pictured. The Made Rite and Plymouth are more Ivory colored with black paint whereas the Strong Set is a slightly off white with very dark blue paint. Above all else they are very comfortable to hold and the solid plaster filling gives them a little heft.

Just wondering if the Plymouth is Plymouth England or Plymouth USA. Well the tall ship logo on mine would lead me to believe USA. Also here is a pic of a packaged one that says Made in USA
