For those who don't know I'm a fairly new afficionado of synthetic brushes. Not because I'm a tree hugger; I have no special love for the vicious little badgers, but because of price vs performance. On another forum this brush came into my crosshairs and since I was looking for a wall of faux badger I instantly pounced on it. There is simply no way that I would pay for or want the same brush in badger. It just wouldn't work for me.
My Frank Shaving 28 x 54mm "Muhle like" STF V2 brush came in today.
Frankly I don't know what to make of what I received. I wanted a brush, and the quality and care should have been put into that. Other than hand lathering the brush I haven't used it, but the packaging... If a company cares they don't poop on the brush. The stand is too small for the knot, and one prong of the stand was cutting the knot away from the main part of the knot, making a sort of spike sticking out to the side. They had to have seen it because it was wrapped in tissue paper before it went into the brush box. Using a hand to contain the knot and working the stand over it is a small touch, but wouldn't have taken the chance of damaging the knot and only would have taken at most 3 seconds. It was the first thing I saw and immediately told me that they just don't care. I can get the same "couldn't give a crap" attitude with Chinese goods. Oh wait, this is Chinese, so it's typical.
In the package were some other boar brushes and a few tiny styptic pencils. A nice touch, but if they can do that, why not a bit of care in packaging the primary item that I wanted?
Definitely conflicting messages being sent.
My brush, near as I can measure with a ruler, has a knot exactly 28 x 54 mm and feels to my hand exactly like my Muhle Gen4 V2 STF which is as good as it gets. My previous largest brush is a Simpson Chubby1 in Best and this brush dwarfs it. But I'm hoping that because of the inherent characteristics of synthetic fibers that I can use if for facelathering. That's why I jumped on it when I read of it (on another forum). It's a bigger wall of faux badger that I can use without having it cover my entire face. I've been looking for just such a brush for some time.
Tomorrow I'll use it for face lathering. For now it's drying from the hand lathering with a snug (not tight) rubber band around the base of the knot to try to get the knot back into shape.
The boar brushes that were thrown in? One has a tiny loft and I think will actually work quite nicely, but clearly the handle is made down to a price. Handles don't really mean much to me though as long as they're functional. OK, I appreciate Ivory and horn as much as anyone, but I don't have any because for me it's function first.
The 2nd boar that was in the package is actually the largest loft of any boar in my cabinet. Time will tell regarding it. Normally I don't like a loft of 55mm in a boar but in hand lathering this one it actually felt quite good.
The knot of the brush I paid for actually feels quite good and what I wanted. But why the complete lack of concern for the knot in packaging? I simply don't understand. Despite what I wrote above, a side by side comparison with the Muhle Gen4 V2 shows that it's actually softer; I think so and my wife does also.
I'll shave with it tomorrow.
