Did someone mention pork belly? YUM! Love to put a slab of that on the smoker from time to time. Not cardiologist approved but it sure is tasty!

Actually, after the knee jerk reaction by the moronic masses over fat clogging the arteries died down and sanity returned to the discussion it was found that pork fat is actually of a different type than that of beef fat. It's beneficial to the human body. I wouldn't eat 5 pounds of it in a sitting, but in moderation, like most things, it actually does a body good.
Yup, I like to make my own bacon also. I pretty much all bacon, the belly type, but also buckboard and Canadian.
Whenever hysteria grips the masses you're pretty much guaranteed that if you ignore it you're doing the right thing.
The Chinese make a pork belly dish (probably more than one) and when I saw Mind Tsai make it on PBS all I cold think of was that it looked delicious. It would be worth taking a Prilosec to have a serving of it.

Indeed. I picked up some can smoked salmon from the dollar store the other day. In cans like sardines. It was not bad. I could see it working with eggs.

We have a friend who makes a New England type chowder with canned salmon. She buys the skinless/boneless. FWIW, if your canned salmon has bones, they are edible.

I had assumed it was like the sardines and were all edable with bones too. Glad to know for sure! Has anyone tried the canned mackerel? I was not a fan really last time.

I've eaten it but I don't really know what to do with it. Do you know if it makes a decent fish salad, the kind with mayo and onion and celery?
Edit: "Net search to the rescue! I did a search for "canned mackerel recipes" and found a mess of 'em. Fish cakes/patties, yes, a mayo salad, or even just the drained fish with some onion and mayo. Lots of other recipes too. Mom used to make a tuna & maceroni casserole. I don't know why mackerel couldn't be substituted for the tuna.

The bones are edible and are calcium... jut sayin'. If try it please let us know how it works out. This discussion got me looking at tuna casserole recipes. So after collecting a bunch of them I found out that the wife hates tuna casserole. That explains why I only made it once in the past 4 decades. I had forgotten.

We have a lot of prisons in my area and when I have delivered commissary pallets to various units there is always lots of cases of mackerel...only Ramen noodles are more prolific(by a wide margin)

Probably. We buy it for $1/can at times and I buy it by the case to make the "fresh" dogs food. I make about 5 gallons at a time and put it in 2 serving trays (2 dogs). It's cheap animal protein and calcium and they love it.
