GarnerPW I noticed your recent SOTD post over on TSD. You used an ER stropping machine on a Red Devil blade. I picked one of these up recently, along with a Star/Kampfe stropper, but don't have a leather strop for either. What are the dimensions of your strop? Leather width and thickness are my main concerns. Thanks! I had one made based on a strop from a Valet Autostrop set. I can measure the strop this evening if you like. If you could get the measurements of your strop I'd greatly appreciate it.

I took photos of the strop beside a tape measure for you. The first two are just showing the strop front and back. The next two are the length of the strop. Then the width of the strop. The width has to be just wide enough to fit in the stropping machine you have. Lastly there is the length of the tab on the backside. This needs to be just long enough to rap around the D-ring.

What thickness would you estimate the leather to be?

If you have a stropping machine or a Valet Razor and a Tack Shop near you, they should be able to make you one. You could also reach out to @drygulch over at TSD, I know he is a leathersmith. If you like and are willing to pick up part of the cost I can have one made for you.

19 December +9 ShavesPre-Shave: Hot Shower Brush: 28mm Faux Finest Badger, Frank Shaving (FS) Soap: Mix of Edwin Jagger Aloe Vera, Williams and Arko Razor: Valet VC2, Autostrop Blade: Feather FAS-10 Carbon Steel(CS), Feather Seikan (16) Strop: Amish made Post-Shave: Cold Water rinse, OSMA Alum block and Clubman Aftershave Photo: I have came back to the Valet. It is time to finish with this blade as I have another Valet I would like to try out. One that I do not have to alter the blade to fit the razor. Todays soap was a mixed tub. When I make a shave stick what ever soap I have left I put into the dish. The last soap I added was the EJ. Man can this stuff lather and it smells of Arko. All around really good soap. A two pass shave and a little buffing left me with a decent shave.

That's why I didn't post it in the Williams thread. I was scared of the brick. The dish is just a mix of what ever is left, not one that was made intentionally. Kind of like when you have to eat the left overs in the icebox before they go bad. So you throw everything you have into a pot to heat it up. I think down there in your neck of the woods they call it gumbo. That's it, it's my "Gumbo Soap"

So I have the strop now, along with both an Ever Ready and Star stropping machine.
I'm going to run both stroppers thru their paces with a few spare carbon blades and report back. Hoping to clean up the edge a bit and squeeze a few extra shaves per blade.

20 December+10 Shaves Williams WednesdayPre-Shave: Hot Shower Brush: 28mm Faux Finest Badger, Frank Shaving (FS) Soap: WilliamsRazor: Valet VC2, Autostrop Blade: Feather FAS-10 Carbon Steel(CS), Feather Seikan (17) Strop: Amish made Post-Shave: Cold Water rinse, OSMA Alum block and Tai Winds Aftershave, Avon Big Whistle Decanter Photo: It has been a little while since I used the Valet Razor. I have to get the proper angle again to get the optimal shave. Today I did a three pass shave that was alright just not great. Could it be that the blade is starting to wane? Only the next couple of shaves will tell.

How did I miss this wonderful thread? I am glad I finally found it. I was just looking at some Valet Auto Strops. I have three, but I have no AS strop to go with them. I use the Feather stainless blades with it. I had gotten the CS blades first, but they stunk. I guess they needed a good stropping. Maybe my technique stunk back them. Who knows. However, nowadays, I can shave successfully with anything. I am thinking about gluing a Gem blade on a Popsicle stick next. That is cool that you made your own strop.
