BTW according to an Accutec customer service agent they don't make the shaving blades. That part of the company was sold to Edgewell who produces them elsewhere. Haha, the customer service agent probably doesn't know that there's such a thing as crazy folks like us that shave with SE GEM style razors. The only plant that makes SE blades is the Accutec plant in VA, Energizer/Edgewell sold that plant, which was the former Personna Industrial Division plant. the only plant that Edgewell operates is the Israeli plant and they don't make SE blades there. You can call the customer agent back and tell him/her that the blades I use for shaving have packaging that clearly says they came from their plant in Verona, VA.

I was wondering about those. So you tried the American Line 66-0362? They have blueing like the PAL blades. How bad were they compared to GEM and PAL blades? I haven't tried the American Line. But I have some of the Gem and PAL 3 facet bulk CS blades and for me they are a rough shave. The CVS CS blades are light-years better. Who makes the CVS blades? (I know CVS doesn't manufacture blades) Are they carbon or SS? I've never seen them at CVS, do they hide them some place in the store?

I believe it is Accutec or a subsidiary. I have not found any CVS blades in my local stores in over A year now. Purchase online or find a mom and pop drugstore. That is where I find my gem blades and Williams soap.

I 2nd that. I love the CVS blades. I buy out the entire lot they have on the shelves when I go in. I anticipate that they will stop selling them one day, (thats usually how my luck goes) so I buy all I can and hoard them. I kinda hope that they see that they are still being purchased, and will make it a point to keep them on the active line up.

Well, I'm not surprised that the CVS blades were made by Accutec. I've heard them mentioned from time to time as decent blades, but what are they exactly? Are they carbon steel or stainless steel GEM's?

The CVS blades are carbon steel and are stocked in the shaving department at my local CVS. If anyone wants me to pick sone up for them they run about $5 for the 10 pack in the plastic dispenser.

I don't see why any of the carbon steel blades would be different, they all come from the same factory, they all are honed with a 3 facet edge, they should all shave the same. For carbon steel blades, I have only used GEM and PAL blades and I can't tell any difference, they are both damn sharp and get the job done. They aren't as smooth and the edge doesn't last anywhere as long as the stainless steel PTFE coated blades but they're cheaper too buying them in 100 packs.

Now, I know you are going to say a blade is a blade, but I consider myself a decent technique guy, and I can tell a difference.

Not sure, I can tell you that these blades are sharp and give a smooth shave: While these blades feel tuggy and the shave is rough:
Maybe there is some post honing step done to the edge, stropping or additional polishing ?

I do not know what extra steps they take but there is certainly a difference!

The American Line blades are made by Accutec in Virginia, same factory that makes GEM. PAL and Treet SE blades. They are blades made for the construction industry, hardware stores and such. The part# on that package is 66-0089 and if you got to atblades.com the specs on that blade say Carbon Steel with 2 facet edge. 2 facet edge blades are not sharp enough for shaving anyway, always look for blades with a 3 facet edge. They do list a lot of GEM blades in different packaging on their web site, some 2 facet and some 3 facet edge. So even if the seller doesn't list the specs of the blade, you can use the part# from the package and look it up on Accutec's web site. This is 100% correct. 3 Facet and .009 thickness seem determine suitability to shaving. I have asked AccuTec for complete breakdown of their offerings suitable for shaving. I have no response as of yet. They list a “Gem Scientific” on their site that seems interesting. Carbon steel, .009 thickness, 3 facet, steel backing. I will post a review if they are suitable.

The blades they list as “Gem Scientific” are aluminum backed in 10 and 100 blade dispensers. I suspect they market them as “Gem Scientific” because they are unwrapped, so there would be no chance of contamination of cardboard particles on the blades in laboratory situations. I have the 100 blade pop-up dispenser of those blades and there's nothing on the package that says “Gem Scientific” or anything that would signify there's anything special about those blades. I don't see why there would be any difference when it comes to shaving between these and other carbon steel blades with the same specs. They work for me, I just used a fresh blade in a ER 1912 they other day.
