Recently on a YouTube video comments, the question was posed ''Why do you prefer SE over the unmentionables?" This was my response. '' to me, there is less chatter, less blade jump, and a more rigid blade."All of that combined with the fact that there is more blade feel, and for the majority of folks the angle is easier to find"
I like the history, and the steampunk feel, but the way the shave feels is what does it for me. With an older unmentionables you have to nail the angle exactly perfect or it is an exercise in futility. On an SE, there is a bit of forgiveness. Not to mention, it forces one to have better technique which of course will translate to better shaves with the unmentionables as well. With less blade options you have to develop the skill to get the most out of any blade.
So, why do you prefer SE over the either older or newer unmentionables?

Unmentionables have never really worked for me. The ones that did (unmentionables) look more like sex toys than razors. So, yes, there is an aesthetic component, too.
Blade rigidity is at the top of my list why I use SEs. I come from cut-throat razors, and I get similar, and often better, shaves with SEs. But without the hassle of honing and stropping. Great stuff.
SEs work best for my skin. I can get by with two-pass shaves and a few touchups. I was never able to get similar efficiency with DEs.
And yes, they look better. Well, most of them do. Unfortunately, one of my all time favourite SEs is the Schick Adjustable, and it is ugly as sin. But it works just so well - and I can take it on board a plane, too, which is fantastic.

For all the reasons you mentioned OS. I can use unmentionables but they just don't work as good; when the blade is too dull they bite and draw blood. When a SE blade is dull it doesn't get all pissy and throw a fit.
FWIW, todays blade has 22 shaves on it and is still worthy of more shaves. Try that with an unmentionable.

No doubt. I have been using my Treet blades and after swapping to my GEM blade I notice a difference. I think it has more to do in general with a SE blade rigidity and thickness rather than anything else, at least my.02 cents worth.

I prefer SE equally to one older type of SE. But onto the subject of safety SE's, easy angle finding, smooth and comfort shaves and mainly less irritation for me.

Is the less irritation due simply to the razor, or from improved technique?

I might be the odd one here. I prefer wedge SE's because of the good unmentionable(Fussy was here) shave with the ease of a safety razor. Plus a permanent blade is free to shave with, if you can hone your own. No disposable blades to deal with. To date, my favorite disposable SE, is my injector. That was my best shave on the channel so far. Ill be using that one again, next shave. The micromatics are too aggressive for me.

It took me about a year of transitioning to full time SE razor use, but the shaves are now SO much smoother and longer lasting. The stiffer blade produces far superior results, IMHO. The downside is that I'm still presentable with very little stubble 24 hours later, but really wanting a morning shave before work.
That, and SEs just look so much more bad-@ss than their watered-down cousins. I challenge you to find an unmentionable that looks as awesome as a Heljestrand with a wedge blade, a Rolls or an open-comb Micromatic. No contest...

I enjoy that they are the original Safety razors. They look better and are just more fun to use. I get good shaves from all types of razors but like the feel of the SE and Injector. Part of that feel is the vintage look and knowing they were first.

The looks is what pushed me towards SE shaving. Once tried, I also found that I prefer the more rigid SE blades vs the thinner unmentionable blades.

I'm going to be different here. I enjoy SE razors as another part of my rotation of SE and unmentionable razors. I don't particularly favor one over another, although I think I get better shaves from...dare I say it here?...those other razors. Please don't ban me! 😟🙄😛

I use all kinds of different razors. Your among friends. Keep working on the SE you will come around.
