Some do and some don't know that I have heart disease and had a major replumbing operation a year ago. The heart is doing fine, but there is a symptom that some folks get along with the heart disease, I just never realized it until my heart got it's new plumbing. It's called Peripheral artery disease (PAD) which results in claudications. In my case they are most noticeable in the legs. It results in a blockage that limits the amount of blood getting to the calves. When I walk I quickly experience pain in the calves that leaves after a brief time out from walking. The pain can be quite severe depending on how long I continue working after the pain begins. A cane is used for support when the pain is really severe.
The therapy for it is to get on a treadmill and walk until the pain starts and continue until it's time to stop and take the break. Then do it all over again. Over and over, pain, take a break, pain, take a break. Basically it's to train the blood flow around the problem area(s). I've been doing that since October, got better function and have now plateaued because my ankles started to hurt and that limited the walking I could do. In fact I was regressing. It isn't life or limb threatening so I was in no hurry, I was letting things play out and see what I could do on my own to get better.
Enter the miracle pill. I discovered vitamin K2 MK-7 3 weeks ago. There are many vitamin Ks and many forms of vit' K2, but the MK-7 version is the only one that does what it does and is of interest to me. It tells the body to keep the calcium in the bones where it belongs. My claudications are calcifications, calcium where it's not supposed to be. I had been taking it for a week and the week after when in cardiac rehab' I was able to do things on the treadmill that I hadn't been able to do for months. The second day that week I far exceeded what I did the previous day in rehab and had never been able to do at all. At that point I knew it was no longer a fluke, but real.
This past weekend I had a match and did much more walking than I previously would have been able to. I was dragging things around and taking them uphill for storage. I never would have been able to do that a month ago. At no point was I stopped from pain, but I stopped anyway to allow the calves to "catch up" so that I could walk at a more normal pace.
My vascular surgeons suggestion was and still is surgery to scrape out the arteries. No doubt he doesn't know about the Vit' K2 MK-7. I've been putting off the surgery because I don't want to have anyone "playing" inside my femoral artery. Now maybe I won't need the surgery at all. I'm going to keep taking it for awhile and see what happens. The only caution is that folks taking blood thinners shouldn't take it.
Because of what it does I think folks subject to osteoporosis should also be taking it. But I'm no Dr', again they don't know about it since our Dr's here in the US go to schools controlled by the pharmaceutical industry and if it doesn't come out of a beaker they don't teach it.
Foods high in K2 MK-7 are fermented sauerkraut and a Japanese food called "natto" (I hope I got that right.) The capsules I'm taking have it from the natto source. The clinical dose is 120mcg, my pills are 90mcg. So I take 1 on day one, and on the second day take one in the AM and one in the PM for an average of 135mcg for the 2 days... close enough.
Maybe this info' will help someone, maybe not. I intend to stay on it and see what happens.
Oh, and my ankle pain has gone away. But I can also possibly attribute that to banishing Omega 6 oils from my diet, so I don't know if that's due to the Vit' K2 MK-7.
When I know more I'll post it here.
