Today's shave: Schick I-2 Hydro-Magic with Schick blade. T&H Lavender cream. This was my first day in a few weeks with the Hydro-Magic. These post-WW2 razors seem to be much milder than what I'm used to, as my shave was fair but not great--will have to press harder tomorrow. If that doesn't work I'll change blades and see what happens. The most likely problem is that I am used to heavier razors, as I used a Schick G last week and had the same problem. I usually go with thinner lather with my I2H-M than what I'd use with my E2 and get smooth effective performance. OK thanks--I'll try that as well.

Greetings Thursday 28th March 2013 Prep: Shower Razor: Ever Ready 1914 Little Lather Catcher Blade: Treet Carbon Brush: Vulfix 404 Mixed Soap: Tabac Aftershave: La Toja Balm Third shave with the Treet carbon blade and a nicer feeling shave than yesterday which I suspect is in part due to the superior beard lubrication qualities of the Tabac soap. The blade is however now finished, which is, IMHO, not bad for carbon steel. Do I like these more or less than the GEM Blue Star carbon or the GEM stainless coated blades? I have to say that I honestly do not know. I need to shave more with all three, but I am sure that these carbon blades deserve not be dismissed; they do deliver an excellent (but different feeling) shave. Regards Dick

Soap: Williams Brush: VDH Boar Blade: Personna PTFE ( 4 ) Razor: PAL Adjustable on set on "H"
Everything clicked perfectly today:Williams went from zero to lather in a couple of seconds, the PAL was really effective,I've been breaking it in slowly and it really hit it's stride today, a fast, effortless shave.

Hooray, the first SEs have arrived. So I got a little silly and whipped up the Scottish Fine Soaps soap a little fierce. Picture 1: GEM Micromatic Clog Pruf with Ted Pella blade. Scottish Fine Soaps soap and aftershave. Thäter 26mm two band prototype (review here: goo.gl/YwNca). Picture 2: random stuff, the GEM in a box, and the cut-throat I used to clean up after the GEM, a 1930s Austrian wedge. Right. The shave. I am not overly impressed. On the plus side, one can actually cut oneself with these things, which is manly and therefore somewhat cool. SE (or DE) users talking about the aggressiveness of the favourite tools always makes me smile a little, because I am used to using cut-throat razors, so aggressiveness is rather relative. That said, these Ted Pella blades bite. And not necessarily in a good way. If they were cut-throat blades, I would treat them with chromium oxide and give them a 100 rounds on a high quality strop. As they are, they are quite harsh. The resulting shave is, of course, close, but lacking in the smoothness department. I'll try a different blade tomorrow. The razor is actually quite a neat piece of equipment, albeit significantly lighter (not to say flimsy) than I had thought. I will readily admit that I had been expecting something with the heft of a Dovo Futur. Well, at least it is like new and did not cost much. Scottish Fine Soaps, however, never disappoint. In terms of quality of lather and care, I can think of only two soaps that will outperform it, both from Italy and both in the €60+ region. The good people at Straight Razor Designs have finally made the full line available in the US goo.gl/fvh8E. If you like the scent of Mitchell's Wool Fat but want a soap that actually works, SFS is for you. Just for the record, the brush is sitting on top a bit of lather, not the soap direct. How is that for density of lather and backbone of brush?

Greetings Good Friday 29th March 2013 Prep: Shower Razor: GEM Heavy Flat Top Blade: Treet Carbon Brush: Vie Long 13061M Horse Cream: La Toja Sensitive Aftershave: La Toja Balm A new Treet blade and a really superb shave. I did not palm strop this new blade as I am never truly one hundred percent sure as to whether it helps smooth the blade or it dulls it. Have a great Easter. Regards Dick.

Razor: Ever Ready 1914 Blade GEM Stainless coated Brush: VDH Pure Badger Lather: Godrej Menthol Mist cream Post: Alum, Lucido, unrefined Shea Butter
Results: Great Friday shave. I love most of my SE razors, but the ER 14 to me epitomizes what SE shaving is all about: The close shave... the amazing look and feel of the razors... and the audible feedback. Mostly BBS.

Another day, another GEM. Having spoken to an old friend first, I decided to give the Pella blade a special treatment: chromium oxide, then a proper strop. I used a thin pen and duct tape to fix the blade, then proceeded like with a cut-throat. Much better, yet impractical for everyday use. The shave was a lot less aggressive, yet still light years away from a properly honed cut-throat blade. Well, I have some more blades coming my way, may they will be better. The razor is quite pretty and functional. I cannot quite see a difference between it and yesterday's Clog Pruf, but my wife thinks it is prettier. Both fit nicely into our 1926 bathroom in any event. Speaking of which, does anyone know if vintage stands exist for these (as well as older Henckels/Heljestrand lather catchers)? I wold very much like to have one or two to replace the modernish Mühle ones I currently have. The cream and aftershave milk are Esbjerg of Vienna Verbena. The shop is located in the heart of Vienna and specialises in top-of-the-line products. This is their eponymous house brand and puts even the big English brand names to shame. If you're in Europe, you might want to give them a try as they are currently on sale. They will be available in the US shortly, too. The brush is my infamous Thäter two band prototype - in my opinion the best brush ever made (some friends and I tested about 60 different brushes including the expensive Plisson and Rooney lines, and this one came out on top for everyone involved in the experiment). The handle may not look much, but it is highly functional. The telltale uncut tips of the Thäter, combined with the high grade hair and German craftsmanship, result in strong backbone but velvety feel, as well as maximum water absorption for easy lathering.

Greetings Easter Sunday 31st March 2013 Prep: Shower Razor: GEM 1912 Baton Handle Blade: Treet Carbon and GEM Blue Star Carbon Brush: Semogue OC Boar Soap: Cella Aftershave: Body Shop Maca Root Balm I got off to a bad start with this shave having commenced with a Treet blade on it's third shave; it quickly became obvious after half a pass that the Treet blade was finished and I could not continue with it. This confirms what I had suspected that these blades dull very quickly and are (for me at least) a two shave blade. I finished off with a GEM Blue Star carbon blade and ended up with a superb shave. I do not think that that the Treet and the GEM Blue star are the same blade but I do accept that many SE users with a lot more experience than me think they probably are. Regards Dick.

Right. This keeps getting better. Having re-read (again) the usage instructions for the GEM razors, I decided to use even less pressure while keeping the head flat on the face. Behold! it worked. Same close shave, but with less irritation. Actually, none. Nice. The 3rd shave with the Pella blade, by the way. The brush is yesterday's Thäter's big brother, a bulb shaped 26mm two band with the stock handle. The soap is Green Mountain Soap's Spiced Rum ( goo.gl/dqfmq): "Triple milled shaving soap formulated to provide a creamy, sturdy, slick lather. Essential oils of bay rum, spices, herbs, and citrus are grounded by a woody-earthy scent that transports you to exotic islands." Not sure about the exotic islands (the most exotic island I've ever been to being Rügen) but the rest of the ad is spot on. goo.gl/i86HG has pictures of the plant and the production process. It is the most skin friendly soap I have ever used, but still works very well (something I cannot say of any other eco friendly soap).

Brush- VDH Boar Soap-Williams Razor- Eversharp/Shick Hydro-Magic Blade- Personna PTFE ( 11 ) Aftershave- Pinaud
Stayed up too late woke up too early...had to be up and out quickly this morning.
Good old faithful, the I2H-M shaved wonderfully on auto-pilot,grabbed the Pinaud Mrs.Razorx put in my Easter Basket...capped off a decent Sunday shave and out the door.
The wetter the better,my best injector shaves happen with when my lather has high percentage of water content.
